April showers -- and a new project -- bring two nights of readings

Join us for a 2-night reading spectacular of 4 brand new short plays, created from scratch by Truant artists over the last month!

This is the first step toward a fully produced run of these plays in Autumn 2013. Get in on the ground floor, giving writers valuable audience feedback for their next draft, before the directors and actors dive into the rehearsal process.

As usual at a Truant reading, there will be a bar. Also as usual, these readings are free. We are not shy about asking for donations, though, which can be made in cash in person or as a tax-deductible donation.

David Platt (director)
Katie Fabel (writer)
with Shawn Ack, Ariana Fekett, Natalya Krimgold, Mateo Prendergrast
Omar Perez (director)
Kristen Felicetti (writer)

TUESDAY, April 30 @ 8PM:

Happy Hour! Happy times!

It's Spring, and we don't care if the weather disagrees! Let's celebrate with cheap drinks, loose structure and vigorous conversation with people you like and respect. There will be pizza.

We miss you, truants of the world! We want to stay connected to the community, hear all about what you and your people are up to, and catch you up on the latest happenings over at Truant Arts.

Usually, at these happy hours, we ask for a $10 donation when you come hang out. This time we're taking a slightly different route. While we will, of course, take any cash donations you want to give, we're encouraging you to donate through Fractured Atlas and get a tax deduction in addition to the warm fuzzy feeling of helping create new American theatre.

Join our 13th day/$13 dollars campaign! Information will be on hand at the bar, or just follow this link.

We can't wait to see you there!!

February reading is tonight!

Join us at Space on White, 81 White Street, south of Canal and just east of Broadway, as 2 groups of talented performers read 2 new plays!

Each reading will be followed by a brief talkback session, giving the writers open and honest feedback as they work their new pieces of theatre through to completion.

We're bringing some new artists into the Truant family and reuniting others who have already worked with us and each other. Join the party; it will be free and it will be fun! As always at a Truant Arts event, there will be a bar. We hope to see you there.

(If you arrive before 7:30, please wait patiently in the lobby. Once the reading has started, there will be no entrances allowed until after the first play is complete.)

"Blues Man" by Joshua Cox
directed by Jasmine Pierce
featuring Heather Boddy, Grace Czerniawski, John Knapp, Stephanie Schwartz, Ja'ron Young

"The Reason For Play" by Lavinia Roberts
directed by Julia Goldstein

Actors who produce are heroes

Had the chance to catch a small show by a couple of writer/actors who have decided to take control of their own futures by devising their own work and seeing that it gets on stage.

Theirs is a tough road that we all should consider walking down. But, if you aren't ready for all that, consider supporting.

Here are the details.

New project by friends of Truant looking for talent

Our friends at ArtEffects are launching a new film project and have put a call out for actors and writers to get involved.

The project sounds like good fun and hard work so if you are interested in more info, check it out here.

As always, we hope the truant in you makes work and lives the life you want to live.

Here's a tip (given to actors with love)

Dear, sweet favorite actor friends (and those who want to be our actor friends), I was doing some electronic housekeeping and want to share a tip with you.

When you name your headshot and resume files, use your name.

As much as we love you and want to work with you, files called "largeheadshot.jpg" and "actingresume.pdf"-- while they no doubt make your life easier in the short term -- don't help you long term because they join the hundreds of other "largeheadshot.jpg" and "actingresume.pdf" files in our records.

Help us cast you. Stand out electronically. Be pals.

Use your name.

BONUS TIP: When we ask for headshots and resumes as jpg and pdf files, we have a reason and really want jpg and pdf files. Really. They make our lives easier and we look favorably on people who help us do that.

It may sound petty, but there you have it. When processing 300-plus headshots and resumes, little things like a .doc file instead of a .pdf file suddenly aren't petty things anymore.

If you've made it this far, there's one last thing. We are gathering headshots and resumes for our files. Please email yours to us -- as a .jpg and .pdf -- at

You can stay in touch by joining our email list.
